Mandatory First Meeting of the 2012 Garden Season
              Saturday, March 24, 2012, 11.00 a.m.
Marjorie Kovler Center, 1331 W Albion

              ***
              Payment
Please bring your payment to the March 24 meeting.  If you expressed a willingness to donate $10 to our summer camp scholarship fund, and/or to donate money to our gardener scholarship fund, please bring those at the same time (thank you!).  We can now accept cash or checks.  Please make checks out to "Parkways Foundation" and write "Ruby Garden" and your plot number in the memo line.

              ***
Please do not begin to work on your garden plot until you have attended the March 24 meeting and the money is paid.  After that, however, feel free to get started!  With this crazy springlike weather we've been having, it's easy to think that it's time to plant.  You may want to be careful about planting tender or delicate plants, though.  Until we're reasonably free of frost, stick with plants that can withstand cold temperatures.

Garden plots must be worked by May 15 at the latest to confirm your commitment.  The rules and guidelines, which you have reviewed and signed, are on the Rules and Guidelines page for your reference.  If you are brand new to gardening, members of garden leadership can provide tips and advice about how to begin!  Talk to someone in the garden, or check out the Gardening Tips and Idea page.

Hello, and Welcome to Ruby Garden Spring.  Sort of.

It's spring for us, as we are getting ready for our fourth season of Ruby Garden.  We just finished making plans for our new application, new and existing plotholders, and our first garden meeting of the year.  We're applying for new grants and are excited for another successful season of Ruby Gardening.
              • Applications are now available on this website, and at the Schreiber Park Fieldhouse, 1552 West Schreiber Ave.
              • 2011 Plotholders in Good Standing may keep their plots from last season, BUT
              • All New and All Existing Plotholders MUST fill out and submit an application by March 10, 2012.
              • New and existing Plotholders will be notified of their plots by about March 13, 2012.
              • Our first meeting of the season, which is MANDATORY, is at the Kovler Center, 1331 West Albion, at 11 am on March 24, 2012.
              • Below is a copy of our poster, which you should feel free to download and distribute, or post, and the 2012 application, which you should submit as soon as possible.

              • Have you seen our new Facebook page?  Check it out.  It's another way for us to get information to you.  Have ideas or feedback about our web presence or the way we communicate with you?  Let us know.
              • As you may know, we were the first community garden in the Chicago Park District's new community garden program.  It's time to celebrate.  Please join us on Sunday, October 16 at 1 pm for a Chicago Park District and Ruby Garden city-wide, end-of-season potluck and gathering.  We will be hosting other community gardeners throughout the Chicago Park District to show them our garden and for all of us to meet and learn from other gardeners and to celebrate the end of the season.   Please let us know if you will be able to attend, so we can plan accordingly.  Please also make a small dish to share, especially involving the fruits of your plot.
              • Cold Frames.  Are you interested in one?  Want more information?  Please check out our maintenance and assistance page.
              • Plot Winterizing.  Our final work day of the season is Saturday, November 19, and it is mandatory for all plotholders.  At this event, you are expected to prepare your plot for winter, including removing structures, weeding and planting cover crops.  We will have more information about this date as it draws closer.  Some plots' timbers have separated; we will be fixing those on November 19 as well.  Please be aware this may include digging inside the corners of your plot.

              • Whole new section added today, July 20.  Check out our new Maintenance and Assistance page for a lot of new information, including our new Garden Help Schedule.
              • But even better . . . check out our new Ruby Garden Forum.  Here you can post messages to other Ruby Garden plotholders.  It should be the central place where you ask people to water your plot or ask garden related questions.  Have extra seeds or tomato cages?  Want to know what people have used to keep bugs away?  Ask here.
              • To use the Ruby Garden Forum, you must sign in.  At the top of the page, you need to click on "other account" and a pop-up showing eligible sign-ins will appear.  If you have an account with Weebly, Gmail, Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, MySpace, Blogger, LinkedIn, or others, you can sign in to the Ruby Garden Forum.  Once you're signed in, you can click on one of the two forums to see ongoing topics, or click on "Start a topic" to, well, start a topic.  There's one there now.  Check it out.  And respond!  You can also subscribe to the forum by clicking the "Subscribe" button.  Questions?  Ask away.  Also, once you sign in, it seems to remember you the next time.  Try it.
              • Where did the Workshops and Events Page go?  It's now a subpage of this Announcements page.  Hold your mouse over Announcements and the Workshops and Events page will pop up.  Try it, it's kind of cool.
              • I don't think I ever announced the Ruby Garden in the News page.  Check it out here.  Did you see something which mentioned Ruby Garden?  Tell us.
              • Breakfast in Bed Plotluck this Sunday!  Come and bring something to share and meet your fellow gardeners.  10 am.  Please bring your own cup so we can keep it as zero waste as possible.

                • Parsley and Kale Seedlings.  Patricia is also bringing parsley and kale seedlings.  Stop by the garden and plant some.

                • Are you a web designer?  Would you be willing to donate an hour or two to help us with our website?  We'd like to alter the template to change some pictures and some other little things that we think someone can do probably do much better than we can.
